Dominican cuisine is told that is from the Earth by the influence it still has today from the diet of Aborigines. Dominican cuisine is famous for being always fresh and for having food from the earth like vegetables. Dominican cuisine is not spicy, but rich in flavor.
The peculiarity of the Dominican cuisine in comparison to other Caribbean islands is precisely the fact that it used primarily onion, garlic, cilantro, cilandro ancho (cilantro), cubanelle pepper and oregano. Therefore comes the famous Dominican sofrito which is unique in flavor as it is prepared using the ingredients mentioned above.
The foods in the land that form the basis of the Dominican diet are green plantains (not as same as bananas), cassava, corn, yautia, among others. Rice is eaten in all its aspects which makes the country a major producer of rice. It is said that a typical Dominican eat rice every day in various varieties such as rice with corn, rice cooked with beans, rice with chicken, rice with noodles and rice for the special Christmas season.
Dominican cuisine is special by the presence of Cassava. The cassava is a kind of bread or biscuit made from yuca which has a presence in the Dominican kitchen because it was part of the diet of Aborigines.
In the area of fruits, you must include in your visit to taste the papaya, pineapple, oranges, watermelons, melons and different types of delicious mangoes as well.
Also on your visit, remember to enjoy a typical Dominican breakfast. Many are prepared the breakfast menu for dinner on many Dominican households. The preferred breakfast is the Mangú which is a famous mashed boiled green plantains mashed accompanying with fried eggs, ham or salami and next to the flavor that adds sautéed onions with vinegar and salt with it.
The traditional dish of the Dominican cuisine is commonly called "The Flag" which is white rice, red beans and meat accompanied by green salad and tostones (fried green plantain).
Other dishes you should not miss are “Sancocho” (Beef and Vegetable stew), the “Asopao” and Mofongo. Also for those who love seafood, you can enjoy delicious fresh fish dishes on the island as dorado (Mahi Mahi), Mero (seabass), Carite(grouper), shrimp, lobsters among others.
