Currency

The official currency of the Dominican Republic is the Peso. The Central Bank of the Dominican Republic was established as a banking institution under the Monetary Law No. 1528 from 9 October 1947 and since then is the only national entity with authority to issue bills and coins in the country.

 

The Dominican peso banknotes come in denominations of:

10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1,000 and 2,000

 

Coins come in denominations of:

1, 5,10, 25

 

 

Credit Cards & Travelers Check

 

Major credit cards Visa, MasterCard and American Express are accepted at most of hotels, resort, shops, restaurants and businesses. Travelers Check are well received in hotels and resorts.

 

ATM

ATM’s are available in all the cities and central town areas. You can find ATM’s in department stores, supermarkets, shopping malls, hotels and resorts which are accessible 24 hours a day.

 

Banks

 

The Dominican Republic has many national banks as Banco Popular, Banco BHD, Banco Vimenca, and also recognized brands like Scotia Bank.

 

Banks are generally open from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday. Some branches generally located in department stores or supermarkets are open until 9 pm in the evening, as well as on Saturday mornings.
