Government

 

The Dominican Republic has a representative Democratic government managed by a President and a Congress formed by the Senate and the Chamber of Representatives. The actual President of the Dominican Republic is Dr. Leonel Fernandez Reyna for the term 2008-2012.

 

The government is ruled by three power of the State: Legislative, Executive and Judicial.

 

 

  • Legislative Power

The legislative power is the first power of the State in the institutional hierarchy. It is represented by the Senate and the Chamber of Representatives.

 

The Senate is formed by 32 legislators that represent the 31 provinces of the country and the National District. The Chamber of Representatives is formed by 150 Member of Congress.

 

The Legislative Power has the responsibility to propose and elaborate laws that after of being approved are sent to the Executive Power to promulgate the law. The Legislative Power has to follow the rectification of international agreements and national contracts that the Executive Power has agreed with international organizations. The main political parties become part or represent their parties in this Power.

 

 

  •  Executive Power

 

The Constitution establish that the Executive Power is managed by the President, who will be elected every for years by direct vote. The President can postulate with one time consecutive re-election and can not postulate again to the same position or to Vice-presidency.

 

The President is the chief of the Public Administration and superior Chief of all Armed Forces and the Police of the country. It is the President’s duty to designate the High rank government employees, to promulgate laws, customs regulations and others.

 

 

  • Judicial Power

 

The third power of the State is the one responsible to administer justice through its specials organs and hierarchies called Courts. The main function is to assure the law and norms are being followed and not violated according to the country’s different codes.

 

The Judicial Power is independent from the other Powers of the State. It has administrative and budget autonomy, but the budget amount is assigned annually by the Legislative Power through the Law of Public Expenses.

 

The Judges of the Supreme Court of Justice are elected by the National Chamber of Magistrate where President of the country is the Chairman. If  the President is absent it will be followed by the Vice President to manage the decision. The judges once elected are immovable.
