Hato Mayor

Location:

Hato Mayor Province is located in the eastern region of the Dominican Republic.  It is bordered on the north by the Bay of Samana, on the east with El Seibo province, on south by province of San Pedro de Macoris and west by the province of Monte Plata. 



About Hato Mayor:

  • Hato Mayor Province has a total area of 1329.29 km ² and its capital is Hato Mayor del Rey, better known as Hato Mayor. It is one of the newest provinces of the country, founded on December 3, 1984 through Act No. 245 and is composed of three municipalities: Hato Mayor del Rey, Sabana de la Mar and El Valle.
  • The main economic activity is agriculture, but Hato Mayor is a province rich in livestock production and fishing also. Their main produce is citrus products: oranges, mandarins, cherries and passion fruit, but also cultivate rice, coffee, coconut, pineapple, bananas, yams, yucca (cassava) and sugar cane.
  • In the province can also find livestock, predominantly cattle breeding for dairy use. Hato Mayor is the fourth largest producer of milk in the country. Hato Mayor is known as well for breeding horses and pigs, goats and poultry and fish production. Fish production is concentrated in the town of Sabana de la Mar, and the products are sold in supermarkets and hotels nationwide. A large variety of fish and shellfish caught in the area, tilapia from the rivers and lobster, shrimp, crab, snapper or red snapper, octopus, and grouper from the coast.
  • In Hato Mayor is located a large area of the National Park Los Haitises, which is one of the most important within the National System of Protected Areas of the Dominican Republic with an area of 206 km ².
  • Flora and fauna in Hato Mayor is very diverse and the main reservation is located in the Parque Nacional Los Haitises, which can be found several endemic species to the island and some native trees such as: La Ceiba, mahogany, cedar, white mangrove, button mangrove, mangle prieto, guava and Palma Real . Among the birds that live in the province are: Parakeet (endemic), the Heron Rizo, Great Blue Heron, King Congo and the heron. Also, terrestrial lizard (endemic) known as frogs, bats haitiensis Phyllops, the jutia and solenodonte can be found.

Climate:

The temperature ranges from about 24-26 º C. Due to its rainfall, it can be classified as a tropical moist forest and tropical humid savanna.

 

How to get there?

By Air: The nearest airport is the International Airport La Romana (LRM) in the province of La Romana. Other nearby airports: Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) located in Punta Cana and Las Americas International Airport (SDQ) in Santo Domingo.

By car: Access from Autovia del Este Highway from Santo Domingo, the exit going to Hato Mayor. The trip takes about two and a half hours.

Cueva Fun Fun:

Cueva Fun Fun (Cave Fun Fun) is one of the biggest caves in the world with approximately 25 km located on the ranch called Rancho Capote. The Fun Fun cave has 8 km that had been explored and only 2.5 km are adapted to for an excursion. Inside the cave are thousands of bats and the sound emitted when flying is similar to "fun fun", for this reason was given the name of the cave. At the Fun Fun Cave visitors can appreciate the beauty of its colorful tunnels and gigantic corridors, also can observe stalactites and stalagmites, petroglyphs and rock art.  The cave is located on Duarte Street # 12, Barrio Puerto Rico, Hato Mayor
