The province is located in the Cibao region bounded on the north and west by the Espaillat Province, east to the Duarte Province and south by the Province of La Vega.


About Hermanas Mirabal Province:

  • It was declared province on August 16, 1952, under the name of Salcedo but in November 2007, it was changed to “The Mirabal Sisters” to honor their memory.
  • It's a rather small province with only 440.43 square kilometers. Its capital is Salcedo and its municipalities are Tenares and Villa Tapia
  • The economy is based on agriculture with the production of banana, yucca roots, cocoa and coffee.
  • The town of Salcedo primarily receives visitors to learn about the Mirabal sisters and their role in the history of the Dominican Republic.
  • The southern part of the province is part of the Valley of the Vega Real and in certain areas can rain a lot during rain season.

 

Climate:


 

The average annual temperature is around 26.5 ° C and the rainy months are from May to November.


How to get there?


 

By air: Through the nearest airport International Airport Santiago (STI) located in Santiago. Other nearby airports: Las Americas International Airport (SDQ) in Santo Domingo or the International Airport Gregorio Luperón (POP) at Puerto Plata.

 

Ground: Direct access through the Duarte highway from Santo Domingo going North bound and then drive through the inter-provincial towards the town of San Francisco de Macoris. The trip takes about two hours.

Mirabal Sisters Museum:


 

The museum is located on the route of the road Conuco - Tenares. The museum features one of the old houses where the Mirabal sisters and family used to live. The museum displays many of the belongings of Patria, Minerva and Maria Teresa Mirabal from beds, household items, books, furniture to the tail of the hair of Maria Teresa.

 

Mirabal Sisters Foundation worked hard to create the museum on December 8, 1994 with the purpose to keep alive the history of the Dominican people and the Mirabal sisters. The surviving sister Mrs. Dede Mirabal is in charge of administration of the Museum today.

 

 


Murals in Tenares:


 

Once in your vehicle if you drive through Salcedo to Tenares can enjoy the beauties of the national artists in murals throughout the area. It is a journey worth making to analyze what each mural for represents to the area and country.

 

 


Tips:

  • If you want to visit other places around while visiting the Hermanas Mirabal province, you can choose a short trip to San Francisco de Marcoris, Moca and Tenares.
  • Do not forget your camera to take pictures of landscapes of agriculture in the area.
