Location:

 

Nagua is located on the northeast coast of the Samana peninsula. Nagua limits to the southeast with Samana, west and south by the province of Duarte and northwest with Espaillat province. The Atlantic Ocean is in the north and east of the province.

 

About Nagua:

 

  • Nagua is the capital of the province Maria Trinidad Sanchez. The province was named in honor of Maria Trinidad Sanchez, an aunt of Francisco del Rosario Sanchez one of our founding fathers. She was shot for political reasons on 27 February 1845.
  • Maria Trinidad Sanchez province has a total area of 1271.71 km ² and is divided into four municipalities: Nagua, Cabrera, El Factor and Rio San Juan. This province is a major producer of rice, coffee and cocoa
  • Rio San Juan is the smallest municipality in the province of Maria Trinidad Sanchez located on the north coast, about forty miles east of Cabarete and fifty miles northwest of Nagua.
  • Coastal communities of Rio San Juan and Cabrera are known as the “Costa Verde” (Green Coast) by the exuberance of its beaches and coastal landscapes.
  • Nagua is a town very cherished by the Dominicans and in popular language Nagua is told, "Come if you like, get out if you can”.

 

How to get there?

 

  • By Air: The nearest international airport is the International Airport Samana El Catey (ACZ), located between the province of Nagua and Sanchez Ramirez off the highway exit Samana-Santo Domingo.
  • By car: On the motorway Santo Domingo - Samana taking it from the Las Americas highway. On this highway light vehicles currently pay 3 tolls that add up a total RD $ 650.00. You can also reach by road from San Francisco de Macoris. Light vehicles pay only a RD$ 30.00 toll but the journey is much longer.

 

Climate:

 

María Trinidad Sánchez province has a humid tropical climate with temperatures above 18 ° C. During summer time, temperature can reach 32 º C.

 


Attractions:

 

Caleton Beach:

 

Caleton is a calm and crystal clear water beach that is surrounded by mangroves and rocks. To get there, you can take Highway No. 5 to Rio San Juan Nagua, about 1 Km. Caleton beach can also be reached by boat taken at the Laguna Gri Gri.

 

Playa Grande:

 

Playa Grande is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Dominican Republic. Playa Grande is ideal for surfers and is world famous for its waves. It consists of about 1 km of white sandy beach bathed by the crystal clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean paradise.

 

This beach is not recommended for children or people who can not swim because it has strong currents and no lifeguards. To get to Playa Grande, take Highway No. 5 in Rio San Juan towards Nagua. It will be after a golf course, at Km 9.

 

Playa Los Minos: This is the most beautiful beach in the town, with white sands and clear waters. It is a good choice if you travel with your family.

 

Diamond Beach: This beach is the most recommended for children because their waters are not deep, but it does not have much room to be in the sand. It is approximately 5 minutes after Cabrera and about 15 or 20 minutes from Rio San Juan.

 

Gri Gri Lagoon:

 

Gri Gri Lagoon is located in the municipality of Rio San Juan. In 1958, this lagoon was a spring connecting a stream to the sea, but in that year an earthquake that put the Gri Gri Lagoon in the tourist spot it is today. Its mangroves and the lagoon are so admirable, and is a perfect place to observe different types of birds in their natural habitat. Its name was given because in predominantly around a tree with the name Gri Gri.

 

They offer boat tours that begin in the lake goes through a natural channel that leads to the mouth of it, through the natural pool and the cave of the Swallows. Some tours offer the chance to snorkel or spend the afternoon in Caleton beach.

 

Carnival in Rio San Juan:

 

The carnival of Rio San Juan started since 1997 and is inspired by marine species. The Rio San Juan carnival is the only marine carnival in the Dominican Republic and the world, whose artists demonstrate the characteristic authenticity of it. The carnival in Rio San Juan is presented on a platform mounted on the waters of the Gri Gri Lagoon where they create an impressive setting for the presentations in the evenings from the 14th to 17th of February each year.

 

Carnavarengue as it is known is an expression of culture of Rio San Juan, an encounter with the sea, livestock, agriculture, where a parade goes into action with the different types of costumes and supernumeraries alluding to marine species. In the parade seem as if marine species leave the ocean for the colors and designs of the costumes. There you can view designs costumes with giant fish, crab, octopus, jellyfish, lobsters, giving life to the most creative carnival of the north coast.

 

Golf: The San Juan River highlights the golf course Playa Grande, one of the most beautiful in the Caribbean. This golf course has 18 holes and 10 of them are bordered by the ocean.

 

Tips:

 

  • The nightlife is active; the town comes alive at night with restaurants, ice cream parlors, art galleries, jazz clubs and small clubs. Get ready for fun!
  • Do not forget your camera.
  • Wear clothes suitable for warm weather, the beach and nightclubs.
