About San Francisco de Macoris:

  • The name San Francisco de Macoris is a mixture of the name of the Franciscan Order (religious organization from Spain who came to this territory during the colonization) and the name of Indian Territory, which is Macorix. • It is the capital of the province of Duarte and is located in the area of the scientific reserve Loma Quita Espuela, which is part of the Northern Mountain Chain.
  • The region is predominantly agricultural and also has livestock production. The industrial activity is developed around the processing of products such as cocoa, coffee, corn, rice, bananas, cattle and beeswax. Despite the vast historical production of cocoa and rice in the region, the factor that determined the sudden economic boom of the city was the continued monetary remittance from the thousands of San Francisco de Macoris locals who immigrated to the United States during the decade of eighties and early nineties.
  • It is the hometown of the recognized writer Hilma Contreras and Porfirio Rubirosa.
