Bahoruco is located in the southwest area of the country. It limits to the north with San Juan province, to the northeast with Azua, to the Southeast with Barahona and to the south and west with the province of Independencia.

About Bahoruco:

 

  • The head municipal town of this province is Neiba (Neyba) that has a population of about 20,000. The province has an area of 1,282.23 km².
  • Bahoruco has two regions: Neiba Valley in the center and south of the province, and the Neiba Mountain range that occupies the north part of the province.
  • Bahoruco has very high mountains like Mount Neiba with 2,279 meters of altitude and also ‘’Loma Monte Bonito’’ with 1,822 meters. They are both located in the beautiful Neiba Mountain range.
  • The agriculture is the principal economic activity of this town and it is hard to believe they have grapes in the town of Neiba and other products like plantain and coffee.
  • The tourism attractions of Bahoruco include the Enriquillo Lake which is shared with the neighboring province of Independencia.

The average annual temperature is 26 °C and sometimes goes down to 12°C and the average Annual precipitation is 655 - 2296 mm

How to get there?

  • By Air: Closest airport: International Airport María Montéz (BRX) located in Barahona or International Airport Las Americas (SDQ) of Santo Domingo city.
  • By Car: Going west on Sanchez highway about 3 hours away from Santo Domingo.

Attractions:

National Park Enriquillo Lake & Cabritos Island:

This beautiful eco touristy area was declared National park in 1974 by the government of the President Dr. Joaquin Balaguer. The park has swampy areas and wetlands, exuberant landscapes and diverse fauna unique in the zone.


Enriquillo is the biggest lake in the country and in the Antilles. It has an area of approximately 265
km² and is part of the province of Bahoruco and Independencia. The lake is 44 meters under sea level and its salinity is higher than the sea. Several tourist and locals visit the park for the diverse fauna where you can find iguanas and flamencos. Also, the park has the Cabritos Island with an extension of 24 km² and visits can be made programmed by the park to take pleasure in the crocodiles that habituate in the area.

Pelempito Drop:

The Pelempito drop is a hollow depression of about 8 km² in the Bahoruco Mountain Range. The bottom of the drop is located 348 meters above sea level while the surrounded massifs can reach 1,186 m. This depression was formed due to the convergence of several regional failure of Mother Nature.

Visitors tend to say that the access point to the Pelempito Drop is very interesting where the temperature change is noticeable and also the transformation from dry vegetation to semi-humid forests.



Bahoruco National Park:

This national park of mountain ranges was created under Presidential decree in 1983 and it was added to the protected areas system in the year 2000. In this Park you can find mountains with more than 2,000 meters high. The highest mountain of the Dominican side is the ‘Toro Hill” (Hill of the Bull) and is next to the Haitian border with an altitude of 2,367 meters.

The mountain ranges has an approximate longitude of 70 kilometers in direction northwest-southwest and covers around 2,400 km². This park goes thru the provinces of Independencia, Pedernales and Barahona.

Tips:

  • It’s advisable to make the trip on a 4 x 4 vehicle.
  • Take adequate clothing appropriate for the mountains and parks: tennis shoes or comfortable shoes to walk.
  • Don’t forget your camera for great landscape pictures!
